With gas around $4.00 a gallon people are starting to look for relief. Unfortunately the policy makers and special interest groups are either causing the problems or are standing by to make them worse. America as a nation has a decision to make. Our freedom, economy, comfort and convenience are all energy dependent. So we now have to choose to give up our freedom, economy, comfort and convenience or create new energy.
A new energy solution will not drop gas and other energy prices overnight. We must understand we have to turn an aircraft carrier not a speed boat. It will take 10, 20 years or even longer to complete all changes. But it will take forever if we never start. Too bad we did not start this in the 1970’s when we went down this road the first time. The changes may take decades to complete but improvement and relief will steadily grow day by day as we transform our energy policies. Taxing oil companies, suing OPEC and draining the strategic reserves will only reduce energy supplies. As a country we have endless energy plans that start at sucks and goes down from there.
To ensure your freedom, economy, comfort and convenience we need to have a real energy plan. A real energy plan will allow us to live free and prosper. Because no one started a good energy plan 30 years ago we will need to increase oil drilling and refining as a carryover measure until new technologies can be put in place. So without further ado, I present my energy plan. The best part of the plan is there is probably a lot of other things that individuals, businesses and government can do to advance energy independence further and faster.
Mission Statement: To provide the United States with environmentally responsible energy required to ensure our freedom, economy, comfort and convenience utilizing current resources, improved efficiency and new technologies.
1. Fast track 50 new nuclear power plants in the next 5 years
2. Build 20 new nuclear power plants per year after the first 5 years
3. Allow oil companies that operate in the United States to each build 1 new high efficiency refinery in the United States
4. Reduce the 40 blends of gas to 87, 89, 92 octane, diesel, a cold weather blend and a hot weather blend.
5. Hawaii should follow Iceland’s geothermal energy plan for all heating, hot water and electrical needs.
6. Hawaii needs to create sugar cane ethanol using geothermal energy for processing.
7. Allow drilling in ANWR, the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic and Pacific continental shelf
8. Drill the new oil reserves found in the Dakotas and Montana
9. Pursue coal to liquid fuels in the Rockies and the Appalachian Mountain ranges
10. Use Diesel-electric train technology in Semi-Trucks
11. Use gas-electric technology in cars and light trucks (similar to the GM Volt)
12. Aggressively move towards making LED lights reasonable for all residential and business lighting needs
13. Increase the integrity of the electrical grid
14. Aggressively pursue hydrogen fuel cells for vehicles
15. Develop DC powered appliances and lights for use in solar powered houses to reduce the waste converting solar power from DC to AC back to DC
16. Tax credits for individual and businesses that develop and employ new energy efficient technologies
17. Invest in wind, solar and tidal electrical production
18. Create investment funds geared to new clean renewable energy technologies to allow small investors to help advance high tech projects
19. Convert the US postal Service to hybrid cars (perfect use due to constant stop and go)
20. Calibrate traffic lights in major cities to allow better flow and less idle time
21. Provide truck rest areas with electrical hookup to stop idle
22. Increase minimum insulation and sealing standards for new housing
23. Build bypass roads if possible around congested areas
24. Maintain technology growth by improving math and science in public schools
25. Bio-fuels and ethanol as long as it can be done without disrupting food supplies and does not take more oil to make than the fuel it yields
26. Have the Department of Energy employ a science and engineering group that aggressively develops new batteries, fuels and power generation processes. On par with the 1960’s space program. Developed technologies to be un-patented and made available to all American citizens.
